Coal is mined in every state of Australia. Mining occurs mainly in Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria.  About 75% of coal mined in Australia is exported, mostly to eastern Asia, and of the balance most is used in electricity generation.
The NEAT index is derived from spot prices for Newcastle 5,500 kcal/kg NAR thermal coal, which is a more liquid market than that of Newcastle 6,000 kcal/kg NAR coal, and includes indicative Panamax vessel freight to reflect the landed cost of Australian shipments for Japan and South Korea.
Coking coal prices continued its upward trend Thursday, tripling in value to $231/mt FOB Australia from $76.45/mt at the beginning of the year. This is based on the S&P Global Platts Premium Low Vol benchmark assessment.
